My little baby is no longer a baby.  He’s 13 months old.  He’s off and running, throwing mini tantrums out of boredom and eating everything, including the TV remote buttons and dirt.

After his one-year appointment, the doctor mentioned it was time to start weaning him off of formula and moving him 100% towards “people food.”

We get panicky at times when weaning our babies off of breast milk to formula.  I’ve wondered, “Did he get enough to eat or enough nutrients or is he hydrated enough?” I don’t always get the proper nutrition, so how do I ensure my son does?

Here are my tips and tricks for how we make sure our little fast-and-furious bundle eats healthy throughout the day.

Breakfast: Pancakes!  Protein-style with bananas or blueberries.  Adding a teaspoon of vanilla makes them taste like cakes.  On days I am REALLY tired, I do whole-wheat frozen waffles.  Smearing on a little peanut butter adds extra protein.

Snack: Dax LOVES food he can hold himself.  Dried fruits and crackers always win.  He loves those fruit snacks, but they are packed with sugar, so he eats them sparingly.


Lunch: Soft rolled chicken tacos are perfect for his tiny hands.  Not a crumb is left.  I add fruit, and then spike his water with juice and ice.

Snack: String cheese, crackers or even a hot dog (there ARE healthy brands) does the trick. Watching his show ensures enough distraction to actually finish his treat, and the snuggles are always an added bonus!


Dinner: We make sure he eats what we eat, which is easy because he eats everything.  But on those nights when he wants nothing to do with our meal, my go-to savers that always work are Greek fruit yogurt with quinoa, spaghetti with veggie sauce or macaroni and cheese.

We wind down with a bottle before bed, which is part of our routine.

Every day is different.  Some days he’ll eat more, and some less.  My doctor advised that toddlers need the same amount of food that would fill their hand each meal. She also said cue into the things he likes.  Dax loves spaghetti, so we feed him until he stops, not the portion amount we decide to feed him.

As far as hydration goes, this kid loves to drink from straws. My drinks specifically. We bought some kid sippy cups that have no-spill straws, and we always offer him water. He loves ice, so ice-cold water does the trick!



Picky eaters are obviously a little more challenging, but hang in there. Being a mom to a toddler is fun and very challenging. We love how interactive and busy our little man is. We also love that he will (mostly) eat what we feed him, we and trust our guts that he’s getting plenty of what’s needed to keep growing into a strong little man!


My favorite recipe usingGo & Grow by Similac® Food Mix-Ins™ for food is with our favorite pancake mix:

1 cup of pancake mix

1 cup of water

1 tsp of vanilla

¼ tsp of cinnamon
